It was one of those moments where time slows down and your inner monologue suddenly becomes painfully loud.
Without missing a beat, Phil’s mother delivered the sentence that would change everything:
“If only dogs would poop in the same place.”
At first it was funny. Then it wasn’t — because it made complete sense.
Why wasn’t there a better system?
Looking around, it became obvious: the pet industry was full of products designed for people with sprawling yards and endless patience, but almost nothing built for apartment dwellers or busy dog parents trying to juggle real life.
That moment sparked a question that wouldn’t go away: What if dogs did have a dedicated toilet — one that actually worked for modern homes?
From Idea to Reality
Around the same time, Philip and Preston Dodd met during a design-thinking course and instantly connected over a shared mindset: solving real problems, not just adding more “stuff” to the market.
After the course, brainstorming turned into action. An old school friend, Tristan Hansen, joined the mix — the kind of person you want beside you when you’re turning a chaotic idea into a real product. Just like that, the founding trio was formed.
They started sketching what a true dog toilet should be:
Not gimmicky
Not messy
Not something that made life harder
But a system — intuitive, hygienic, and genuinely helpful.
Then came the prototyping phase.
A 3D printer appeared. Electronics were built by hand. Parts were printed, tested, broken, fixed, redesigned — again and again — until PottyNook transformed from a garage science experiment into a working product witIf you’ve ever rushed home for a dog toilet break, tip-toed across your lawn hoping not to step in something unpleasant, or tried to manage pet life in an apartment with zero outdoor space — meet your new best friend.
PottyNook is the smart, self-cleaning dog toilet designed for real life. Not the “perfect backyard with unlimited time” version of life — but modern living, where schedules are full, homes are compact, and convenience actually matters.
A Smarter Solution for Today’s Dog Parents
For years, pet products have assumed one thing: that every dog owner has a large backyard and the luxury of time. But millions of dog parents live in apartments, townhouses, condos, or urban homes where stepping outside isn’t always instant or easy.
PottyNook changes that.
It’s a dedicated dog toilet system that:
Encourages dogs to go in one consistent place
Cleans itself automatically
Reduces mess, smells, and daily maintenance
Gives pet parents more freedom and flexibility
Whether you’re working long hours, living in a walk-up apartment, managing mobility challenges, or simply want a cleaner, easier routine — PottyNook is built to fit seamlessly into modern life.
The Origin Story: How PottyNook Was Born
Like many genuinely useful ideas, PottyNook started with optimism… and a very avoidable mistake.
Philip Costner, Founder, was at his parents’ house, clearing out the gutters. Feeling accomplished, responsible, and very adult, he climbed down the ladder, stepped onto the lawn — and immediately planted his foot into a fresh, warm surprise left behind by Kiki, the family Labradoodle.
h real potential.
What started as a funny story quickly became something far more meaningful: a solution that could genuinely help dog parents reclaim time, cleanliness, and peace of mind.
A Global Team With a Very On-Brand Twist
Today, PottyNook is built by a cross-border founding team based in the United States and New Zealand and creating a solution for dog parents everywhere.
And because every great startup needs a plot twist, PottyNook’s marketing brain entered the picture in the most unexpected way – at a law and AI conference in Argentina.
Yes. Argentina.
By pure chance, Philip met a San Francisco-based marketing guru, Clarissa Shetler, and just like that, the PottyNook story gained its international voice. Accidental, global, slightly unbelievable — and perfectly on-brand for a company born from stepping in dog poop.
Meet Pierre: The Spiritual Co-Founder
And then there’s Pierre.
Pierre is the team’s “talking” bulldog — loud, opinionated, and packed with enough personality to run the company himself. While he wasn’t present for the original gutter incident, he represents exactly why PottyNook exists.
PottyNook isn’t about perfection. It’s about making life with dogs cleaner, simpler, and far less stressful, so you can spend more time enjoying their quirks — and less time managing the chaos.
Why PottyNook Matters
At its core, PottyNook exists to give dog parents freedom:
Freedom to leave the house without panic
Freedom from daily clean-ups
Freedom from scheduling life around bathroom breaks
It’s not just a dog toilet — it’s a smarter way to live with dogs.
And it all started with one unfortunate step, one honest comment, and one very good idea.
